Richard Wu

Hermit dwelling under the clouds
雲海蔽山居

Born in Taiwan and immigrated to Australia with his family at age 12, Dr Wu is a practising psychiatrist in Sydney and a Chinese ink painter.

He approaches the ‘inner scene’ of Chinese classical ink painting from both practice and theoretical, psychological perspectives. He has published and given many public talks on the spiritual, psychological aspects of Chinese xieyi painting at psychotherapy venues including the World Congress of Psychotherapy, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and the International Federation of Psychotherapists, where he also chaired the section of psychotherapy and culture.

Dr Wu has also over the years presented topics on theoretical and historical aspects of Chinese classical painting at art venues including the Central Academy of Fine Art (Beijing), National Art School (Sydney), and the Art Gallery of NSW.

His painting follows classical Chinese xieyi and Zen art, as well as incorporating contemporary psychological elements.  He has in the past exhibited at venues including the Art Asia Expo (Beijing), the Art Gallery of NSW (Dobell Finalist), Australian Chinese Painters Association, and the Bridging Hope Foundation.

His six paintings in this exhibition are contemporary reflections of Zen art from the Song period.
